A few keen-eyed DIY packrafters have noticed that the newer Telkwa and Skeena kits have lower capacity ratings than the V3, in spite of being longer and having more air volume in the tubes. This is a result of a more conservative assessment on my part, not something intrinsic to the packrafts; in reality, their capacity is larger than that of the V3, so to avoid confusion I might go back and reduce the V3’s stated capacity. This won’t change anything about the boats themselves, of course.
If you’re curious about how I arrived at those numbers, I’ve written an article about some different ways a boat’s safe maximum load can be calculated – you can check it out here. There I go through a bunch of calculations and then I explain why you should toss those numbers out the window and instead use common sense to decide what’s safe and what’s not.
