Matt (Admin) replied to the topic HELP – Too hot iron – back side of double sided TPU floor melted in the forum DIY Packrafts 4 years ago
Hi Blair, it sounds fine to me. If it is 1000D then you should be able to get a good weld without permanently altering the appearance of the fabric – just move a bit faster. It takes some practice to get the timing right. Cheers

I figure instead of starting a new thread I would tag onto this one.
I’ve been doing some testing and I can heat seal the tube fabric to the flooring (1000D I think), but the heat seems to be coming through a little to the underside of the flooring. If it put more tube fabric underneath the floor it kind of sticks, but in a way that there was…[Read more]

Matt (Admin) replied to the topic First seams – how to tell if it’s good? in the forum DIY Packrafts 4 years ago
I see them now – it looks like your iron might be a bit too hot, but it’s hard to tell in the pictures. I don’t normally see the woven fabric get shiny like that. (What I see doesn’t look like a problem though.) The fabric shouldn’t melt at all, just the TPU. Lowering the temperature a bit will also reduce the chance of it melting through to the…[Read more]

Thanks. I’ve tried adding pics again although they don’t show much. I’ll get on with the build and keep my fingers crossed!

Hi – your pictures didn’t seem to work (I just see an “image not found” icon), but from what you’ve written it sounds like it’s probably fine. I designed the seams to be way more than wide enough, so even if they’re not perfectly sealed they will be strong enough, within reason. Cheers!

Started attaching 3R today (Skeena build). It seemed to go ok but the tube material isn’t uniformly darker across the entire seam (some parts are darker with a shine – others are less so). Not sure if this is ok or if I need to do more?
Also seem to have overheated the bottom TPU slightly in one area. I’m thinking it’s fine on both counts but w…[Read more]

Ah. I just found the link to installing the zipper on the UL, which covers both the position and orientation. I’ll get my coat.

Currently building an UL and really enjoying it. The 115 GSM TPU is much easier for me to work with compared with the 250 GSM used with the Skeena. The thinner, more translucent material allows me to visually gauge the weld and so provides more confidence in the overall quality of the build. It’s also faster to assemble as the heat from the iron…[Read more]
