I’m excited to announce that all the standard weight single-person DIY Packraft kits (Skeena, Telkwa, Atlin, etc.) now include parts for making a back band.

Compared to a simple backrest cushion, a back band moves your seating position forward to better balance the packraft, and it also helps you sit upright in a more powerful paddling position. These things are especially helpful for whitewater paddling.

This new back band can also be used as a simple backrest when you want to relax – just loosen the straps and lean it up against the packraft’s rear tubes. It can be used as a camping pillow, too!

I’m someone who needs a lot of back support, so I tried many different back band prototypes before settling on this one, and this is the most comfortable one I came up with. It’s also one of the simplest to make.

All the instructions for making and installing the back band/backrest are posted here.

Could you please post the measurements for the side and bottom attachments.

Hi Craig, could you clarify which measurements you’re asking for? Like to make the attachment points from scratch, or where to put them?
